Water Service Line Inventory Program

Federally Required Water Infrastructure Safety & Reliability Enhancements

We are currently working on a Service Line Inventory in accordance with the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule (LCR).  We’re excited to share key details, making sure you’re informed and assured about this initiative.

Why the Service Line Inventory?

Safety & Reliability

The Service Line Inventory is a federal requirement aimed at enhancing the safety and reliability of our water infrastructure. It’s part of our commitment to ensuring the highest standards in water quality and compliance with national regulations.

It’s Not About Water Quality Issues

We want to emphasize that this program has nothing to do with any suspected deficiencies in our water quality. We are committed to providing safe drinking water to our community. This is a proactive measure to ensure we have a comprehensive understanding of our water system.

What to Expect

Over the coming weeks, you may notice our teams conducting surveys and assessments around the neighborhood. This is simply part of the process to compile accurate information about our water service lines.

Your Cooperation Matters

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work towards completing this federally mandated program.  Your involvement ensures the success of this initiative and contributes to the overall well-being of our community.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to our team. We’re here to address them and provide additional information as needed. Thank you for being a valued part of our community!

Here’s How You Can Help!

1. Locate Your Service Line.

Locate the pipe that comes from the outside wall in your basement and connects to your water meter.

2) What Color is Your Pipe?

The color of your water service line depends on the pipe material.  Plastic pipes in Colchester can be blue, white or black.

Copper pipes are the color of a penny. Older copper pipes may have oxidized to a greenish-blue, or may have blackened.

Galvanized lines and lead lines are both a dull, silver gray color.

3) Do the Magnet Test.

Use a heavy duty magnet (at least 1/8 in thick) and put it on the pipe between where it enters the building and the first fitting. Does it stick?

A magnet will stick to a galvanized pipe but not to a lead or copper pipe. Be sure to stick the magnet on your service line pipe and not any fittings or the meter.

4) Snap a Photo!

Please take a picture that includes your service line where it enters the building as shown in this picture:

Take the survey below and upload your picture, or email the photo with your name and address to jbessette@cfd2vt.com.
